For two long years my dog named Toby filled our home with cheer,He ran around the house each day and stayed forever near.He barked whenever I would laugh and slept beside my bed,And every happy memory still echoes in my head.
In April something changed in him; he could not walk the same,His shaking legs and tired eyes filled all our hearts with pain.We took him to the doctor’s office searching for a way,They said a problem in his brain was slowly growing each day.
In May he stopped from chasing balls across the living room,He rested quietly in the light while sadness filled the gloom.I sat beside him every night and stroked his gentle head,While tears kept falling silently for all the tears unsaid.
One afternoon in May we knew we had to let him rest,Because the pain had grown too strong although we tried our best.We held him close and said goodbye while crying quietly,And when he closed his tired eyes, it felt so hard to breathe.
Now when I look at photographs still hanging on my wall,I think about my faithful friend and how he loved us all.Although my dog is gone today, his love will always stay,Because the pawprints in my heart will never fade away.
